Vajrasattva, a prominent figure in Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism, is known as the "Diamond Being" or "Thunderbolt Being." This deity plays a significant role in two key Sutras, the Mahavairocana Sutra and Vajrasekhara Sutra.

In the Mahavairocana Sutra, Vajrasattva leads an enthusiastic group eager to learn Dharma from the Vairocana Buddha. When the teachings prove challenging to comprehend, Vairocana Buddha employs a mandala as an expedient means to aid understanding. Vajrasattva raises questions about the necessity of rituals and objects, and Vairocana Buddha explains that these are skillful means to facilitate practitioners' awakening.

Vajrasattva holds a crucial place in Newar Buddhism, particularly in the Kathmandu Valley. Revered as the ideal guru, Vajrasattva is invoked in the guru mandala, a foundational ritual for Newar Buddhist practices.

In Shingon Buddhism, Vajrasattva is considered the second patriarch. Legend has it that Nagarjuna, after meeting Vajrasattva in southern India, received initiation into the abhiseka ritual and esoteric teachings from Vairocana Buddha.

Tibetan Buddhism also reveres Vajrasattva, with the Vajrasattva root tantra known as Dorje Gyan or Vajra Ornament. Practiced across all four Tibetan Buddhist schools, Vajrasattva practices serve to purify obscurations, allowing Vajrayana students to progress in tantra. Additionally, this practice is employed to purify broken Samaya vows after initiation, making it an essential element of Tibetan Buddhist rituals. Beyond personal purification, Vajrasattva is believed to possess the power to purify karma, bring peace, and inspire enlightened activity.
