This is an old oil-varnished Pancha or Five Manjushri Tibetan Thangka painting of master quality. Manjushree, also known as Manjusri, Manjusri, or Jampelyang, embodies the omniscient wisdom of enlightenment. He can discern between correct and incorrect views and beneficial and non-beneficial actions on one's spiritual path. Manjushree bestows intelligence, knowledge, understanding, mastery of teachings, eloquence, and memory. His name means "gentle glory," He is highly regarded in Nepal, where legend has it that he paved the way for establishing civilization in the Kathmandu Valley.
Pancha Manjushri refers to a group of five forms or manifestations of Manjushri, a revered bodhisattva in Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism known as the embodiment of wisdom, intelligence, and enlightened knowledge.
The five forms of Manjushri, known as Pancha Manjushri, are:

1. Manjughosha: This form of Manjushri is associated with the enchanting sound of the Dharma. Manjughosha is depicted holding a vina (musical instrument) and represents wisdom through sound or speech.

2. Vagishvara Manjushri: This manifestation of Manjushri symbolizes the control or mastery over speech and is often depicted holding a sword. It signifies the ability to cut through ignorance and delusion with the sharpness of wisdom.

3. Vajradharma Manjushri: This form emphasizes the aspect of wisdom as the essence of all phenomena. Vajradharma Manjushri is depicted holding a vajra (diamond thunderbolt) and a scripture, signifying the inseparability of wisdom and skillful means.

4. Kumarabhuta Manjushri: This form represents the wisdom of youthful energy. Kumarabhuta Manjushri is portrayed as a young prince, symbolizing wisdom and intelligence's youthful and vibrant nature.

5. Aparajita Manjushri: This manifestation of Manjushri symbolizes invincibility or unbeatability. Aparajita Manjushri is depicted riding a lion and represents the unconquerable nature of wisdom in overcoming ignorance.

Each of these five forms of Manjushri represents a unique aspect of wisdom.

The left hand of the Manjushri is positioned in Vitarka Mudra, which is a gesture indicating teaching and intellectual discussion. It also holds the stem of a lotus flower, supporting the Prajnaparamita, or the Perfection of Wisdom sutra. On the other hand, the flaming sword held in the right hand symbolizes the power of discriminating wisdom and its ability to cut through ignorance, which is the root cause of all suffering. Manjushree or Jampelyang, in this sword-wielding pose, represents the courage and exertion needed to realize freedom.
