Original Hand-painted Multi-Headed, Demigod Bhairava or Kalabhairava Guardian Diety Old Oiled Thanka Painting Newari Art with Silk Brocade
This exquisite painting is an excellent example of an old Bhairava or Kalabhiarava artwork. It is an oil-varnished old thangka that comes with silk brocade, enhancing its elegance. The painting was created by the Buddhist Newar of Kathmandu Valley and depicts Kalabhairava, the guardian deity of Kathmandu Valley. According to Hindu mythology, Bhairava or Kalabhirava is a form of Lord Shiva, who is considered the protector of the Hindu Trilogy of Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheshvara (Shiva). Bhairava is the most fearful and powerful manifestation of Lord Shiva, associated with Samhara (destruction). In Hinduism, Bhairava, also called Dandapani, is portrayed holding the Danda (rod) in his hand to punish sinners.
In Vajrayana Buddhism, Bhairava is known as a fierce emanation of Manjushri Bodhisattva, also known as Heruka or Vajrabhairava. This painting, with its intricate details and powerful symbolism, represents the deity in all his glory. It is a true masterpiece that reflects the rich cultural heritage of Nepal and the spiritual significance of Bhairava in both Hinduism and Buddhism.
