This original hand-painted Tibetan Thangka Painting of the Medicine Buddha, or Bhaisajyaguru, represents healing and spiritual wellness. Meditating on the Medicine Buddha is believed to enhance healing capabilities, enabling practitioners to alleviate their afflictions and extend healing energies to others. Bhaisajyaguru offers guidance to overcome physical ailments and infirmities with an essence steeped in boundless compassion and benevolence. But beyond the physical realm, he transcends as the skillful physician, addressing the profound malady that plagues all sentient beings. He offers the Dharma as a potent antidote to the poisons of attachment, hatred, and ignorance, unraveling the veils of delusion and directing all toward liberation.

The portrayal of Bhaisajyaguru reveals profound symbolism. His right hand extends downward, open-palmed, with the thumb and index finger gently touching, a gesture known as the Varada Mudra, which symbolizes granting wishes. This Mudra encapsulates Bhaisajyaguru's boundless kindness, charity, and compassion, extending to all beings. Within this hand, he delicately holds a sprig of the Myrobalan plant, an esteemed healing herb in Ayurvedic medicine. This plant is believed to remedy physical ailments and alleviate the inner sicknesses of attachment, hatred, and ignorance.

In his left hand, resting in his lap, Bhaisajyaguru embodies the Dhyana Mudra, the meditative gesture symbolizing eradicating all sickness and suffering through attaining absolute truth. Within this hand, he cradles the traditional begging bowl, emblematic of an ordained Buddhist monk. This vessel holds sacred medicinal nectar believed to cure physical ills and alleviate hindrances and afflictions.

The depiction of Bhaisajyaguru encapsulates a profound narrative of physical and spiritual healing, resonating with the essence of compassion, wisdom, and the transcendence of suffering. Each element, from the healing herbs to the gestures and sacred objects, symbolizes the profound depth of alleviating the ailments that afflict the body, mind, and spirit.

As a follower of the Noble One, you should think of yourself as someone sick, the Dharma as the remedy, the Buddha as a skillful doctor, and your diligent practice as the way to recovery.
