This is a fine-quality Bhairabha or Kala Bhairava Thangka Painting. Bhairava is considered a protector. He is a God common to both Hinduism and Tantric Buddhism. In Buddhism, Bhairava is a fierce form of Lord Vishnu, whereas, in Hinduism, he is a fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva. The local indigenous Newar community of Kathmandu valley considers Bhairav as a god of wealth and installs an image of a statue in their offices.

Bhairava is considered a guardian deity. He is depicted in a number of forms, each with distinctly different qualities and aspects. There are many Bhairava temples in Kathmandu and elsewhere in Nepal.
