According to the Swayambhu Purana, the Kathmandu Valley was once a lake. Legend has it that Manjushree, a revered Buddhist deity, saw a lotus flower in the lake's center and decided to drain it by cutting a gorge at Chovar. The valley became habitable after the water drained, leaving fertile land behind. The lotus flower that Manjushree saw later became the Swayambhunath Stupa, one of Nepal's sacred Buddhist sites.
One of the most popular forms of manjushree in Tibetan Buddhism is the one with one face and two arms. He holds a sword of wisdom in his right hand and a book of teachings in his left hand. Manjushree appears in various Tantric forms, each with unique symbolism and meaning.
According to the Swayambhu Purana, a sacred text in Nepalese Buddhism, the Kathmandu Valley was once a vast lake that was not habitable. It is believed that Manjushree, being the God of Wisdom, saw a lotus flower growing at the center of the lake, which symbolizes enlightenment, purity, and divinity. To make the valley habitable, Manjushree cut a gorge at Chovar, which allowed the water to drain out of the valley. The lotus flower settled at Swayambhunath Stupa, also known as the Monkey Temple, and the valley became habitable.
