MANJUSHRI / JAMPELYANG – THE BODHISATTVA OF WISDOM
Manjushri / Jampelyang embodies the omniscient wisdom of enlightenment – the wisdom that discerns the true nature of reality. He can discriminate between correct and incorrect views and between beneficial and non-beneficial actions to be taken on one’s spiritual path. He bestows intelligence, knowledge, wisdom, mastery of the teachings, eloquence, and memory. His name means “gentle glory” and he is especially revered in Nepal, where he is said to have enabled the founding of civilization in the Kathmandu Valley. Manjushri is also the patron Bodhisattva of the Kadampa (i.e. Gelugpa) order of Tibetan Buddhism, which is famous for its master scholars, called geshes.

GESTURES AND ATTRIBUTES
Manjushri’s left hand is in Vitarka Mudra, the gesture of teaching and intellectual discussion. This hand also holds the stem of a lotus flower that supports the Prajnaparamita, or Perfection of Wisdom sutra. The flaming sword in his right hand symbolizes the power of discriminating wisdom to cut through ignorance, the root of all suffering. Manjushri / Jampelyang, in this sword-wielding pose, is representative of the courage and exertion needed to realize freedom.

OIL-VARNISHED THANGKA
An oil-varnished thangka painting is a unique style of thangka, a traditional Buddhist religious painting, typically found in Tibet and other Himalayan regions. Unlike the traditional thangkas that use natural pigments mixed with a binder, oil-varnished thangkas are created using oil-based paints.

The process of creating an oil-varnished thangka involves using oil paints to create intricate images of Buddhist deities, scenes, or mandalas on a canvas or wooden panel. After the painting is completed, it is then coated with a layer of varnish, which not only enhances the colors and details but also provides protection to the artwork.

Oil-varnished thangkas often display vibrant colors and have a distinct shine due to the varnish layer. The use of oil paints allows for a different level of detail and shading, giving these thangkas a unique aesthetic appeal compared to traditional watercolor-based thangkas. However, both styles hold significant cultural and religious significance and are valued for their spiritual representation in Buddhist practices.
