After his father's death, he and his mother were left at the mercy of his aunt and uncle, who made them work as servants for their family. Milarepa studied black magic at his mother's request to take revenge on his oppressors. Despite becoming skilled in black magic, he used his abilities to kill his aunt and uncle's entire family, inviting negative karma into his life.

After committing these crimes, Milarepa's happiness at having assisted his mother disappeared, and he was consumed with guilt. This transformation led Milarepa to search for a master teacher.
