This is an extraordinary original hand-painted Thangka masterpiece depicting Hayagriva, also known as the demigod of protection. Hayagriva, whose name translates to "having the neck of a horse" in Sanskrit, is a deity revered in Tantric Buddhism. He is considered an emanation of the compassionate Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara. He is depicted with three heads and faces, each with three eyes symbolizing the past, present, and future. His six arms hold weapons representing the five wisdoms, great bliss, and the 8 Mahasiddhas.
Hayagriva's attire consists of three layers of clothes and two fastened ornaments representing the six perfections (Paramitas). Hayagriva Mantra "OM HRIH PEMA THAN DRIH BENZA TROHDHA HAYA GRI WA HOOLOO HOOLOO HUNG PHET" is a powerful spiritual practice in Tantric Buddhism.
The meaning of the mantra is profound and requires a deeper understanding. It is believed that through the recitation of the mantra and meditation, one can reduce all the unfavorable conditions of mental construction to perceive the attributes of the five wisdoms. The five wisdoms represent the Wisdom of the Dharmadhatu: mirror-like wisdom, Wisdom of equality, Discriminating Wisdom, and All-accomplishing Wisdom. Attaining the union of bliss and emptiness in body, speech, and mind can lead to spiritual realization and heightened consciousness. The Hayagriva mantra is an essential tool for Tantric practitioners seeking to transcend the limitations of mundane existence and reach a state of spiritual enlightenment.
In this Thangka, Hayagriva emerges as the wrathful form of Vajrasattva, taking on the form of Avalokiteshvara to confront and defeat the formidable demon Rudra. Accompanied by Vajrapani, who transforms into Vajravarahi, they engage in cosmic battles and dances to challenge Rudra's malevolent forces. The narrative unfolds with symbolic gestures and dynamic expressions, portraying the triumph of wisdom and dharma over demonic forces.
The intricate details and vibrant colors in this Thangka capture the essence of Hayagriva's transformative power as he subdues Rudra and compels him to become a protector of dharma. The portrayal reflects the profound cosmic dance, with Hayagriva donning Rudra's demonic form as a garb, signifying the triumph of enlightened principles over darkness.
