This original hand-painted oil-varnished CITIPAT portrays a happy dancing couple in a Tibetan Thangka painting. The painting's intricate details and vibrant colors testify to the artist's skill and dedication. The artist used watercolors on cotton canvas and applied natural colors before covering the painting with oil varnish. The oil varnish protects the artwork against deterioration while giving it luster and depth.

Citipati, also known as the 'Lord and Lady of the Charnel Grounds,' is an integral part of the tantric systems of Vajrayogini. They serve as the primary Dharma protectors and are closely associated with meditation practices on the charnel grounds. The charnel grounds were sites that were filled with human flesh, bones, and blood and were used for cremating corpses (if one could afford the wood). But more often, corpses were left to be ripped apart and eaten by wild animals, such as vultures. These places were considered frightening and were located far from towns, where usually only yogis came to meditate on the impermanence of all phenomena.

The Citipati are depicted as happy-looking skeletons and are often featured in Cham Lama dances performed by monks at specific Buddhist festivals. These events are lively, costumed, and masked dances accompanied by traditional Tibetan music.

The Citipati is an essential part of Tibetan culture and celebrates the symbolic representation of impermanence and the life cycle. The Thangka painting of the Citipati is a beautiful and meaningful art embodying Tibet's rich cultural heritage.
