This old Tibetan painting shows Amitabha Buddha, one of the meditating Buddhas. The painting is coated with oil to protect it from damage and make it last longer.

According to the Larger Sutra of Immeasurable Life, Amitabha Buddha is the most significant Buddha because he is more magnificent than any other great being. Buddha Shakyamuni once described Amitabha as having an incredibly majestic light that cannot be fully described even if praised continuously for an immeasurably long period.

Amitabha Buddha lives in a pure, celestial realm that he created by accumulating infinite merit over countless lifetimes as a Bodhisattva. His brilliant light shines from this celestial realm and fills the entire universe. If sentient beings encounter his light, their defilements are removed. If they see his light, they are relieved and freed from affliction. Those who have faith in Amitabha reach emancipation at the end of their lives because he gives them rebirth in his Pure Land. As Shakyamuni explains, "Sentient beings born in that Buddha-land all reside among those assured of nirvana."

Amitabha is shown in the painting performing the Dhyana Mudra, the gesture of meditation, with both palms facing up and resting in his lap. His right hand, on top, symbolizes enlightenment, while his left hand, below, represents the world of appearance. Amitabha's posture expresses his mastery over the world of appearance through enlightenment and signifies the enlightened state of mind for which samsara and nirvana are one. In some depictions, he holds an ordained Buddhist monk's traditional begging bowl, filled with amrita, the elixir of awakening and immortality. The bowl indicates Amitabha's infinite openness and receptivity towards all sentient beings.
