This is an original, large, master-quality hand-painted Tibetan Thangka of Sahasrabhuja Avalokiteshvara, the Thousand-Armed form of Chenrezig. The central deity is surrounded by the Pancha Buddhas, Pancha Jambhalas, and powerful protector deities, forming an elaborate sacred composition that represents compassion, wisdom, prosperity, protection, and enlightened activity.
Entirely hand-painted in Nepal on handmade cotton canvas, this Thangka is created using natural stone pigments, gold, and traditional Tibetan painting materials. Its large size and exceptionally detailed composition make it an impressive example of Himalayan Buddhist art.
Thousand-Armed Avalokiteshvara – Infinite Compassion
Avalokiteshvara, known as Chenrezig in Tibet, is the Bodhisattva of Compassion and one of the most revered figures in Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism. He embodies the compassionate activity of all the Buddhas and represents the wish to free every sentient being from suffering.
According to Buddhist tradition, Avalokiteshvara made a profound vow to continue helping beings until all were liberated from suffering. When confronted with the immense suffering of countless beings, his form shattered. Buddha Amitabha restored him in a more powerful form, giving him eleven heads and a thousand arms so that he could perceive suffering in every direction and reach out to help innumerable beings.
Eleven Heads and Thousand Arms
The eleven faces of Sahasrabhuja Avalokiteshvara are arranged in tiers. They symbolize his ability to perceive the suffering of beings throughout the different realms.
His thousand arms radiate outward around his body, expressing limitless compassionate activity. Traditionally, the many hands bear eyes in their palms. The eyes represent wisdom and awareness, while the hands represent compassionate action.
Together, the thousand eyes and arms symbolize the inseparable union of wisdom and compassion: seeing suffering clearly and responding to it.
Sacred Attributes
Avalokiteshvara‘s principal hands carry important Buddhist symbols.
His central hands are joined at his heart in a gesture of devotion and compassion.
The lotus represents purity and spiritual awakening.
The mala, or prayer beads, represents continuous compassionate activity and mantra practice.
The Dharma wheel represents the Buddha‘s teachings.
The bow and arrow symbolize focused wisdom and skillful action.
The ritual water vessel represents purification and spiritual nourishment.
The deer skin traditionally associated with Avalokiteshvara symbolizes gentleness, compassion, and freedom from aggression.
Pancha Buddhas – Five Dhyani Buddhas
The composition includes the Pancha Buddhas, also known as the Five Dhyani Buddhas or Five Wisdom Buddhas.
Vairocana represents the wisdom of ultimate reality and the illumination of truth.
Akshobhya represents mirror-like wisdom, clarity, and stability.
Ratnasambhava represents the wisdom of equality, generosity, and freedom from pride.
Amitabha represents discriminating awareness, compassion, and boundless light.
Amoghasiddhi represents accomplished action, fearlessness, and successful enlightened activity.
Together, the Five Dhyani Buddhas represent different aspects of awakened consciousness and the transformation of ordinary mental states into the five enlightened wisdoms.
Pancha Jambhalas – Five Jambhalas
The sacred composition also includes the Pancha Jambhalas, or Five Jambhalas: Yellow, White, Black, Red, and Green Jambhala.
Jambhala is associated with abundance, generosity, prosperity, and the removal of obstacles caused by lack of resources. In Buddhist tradition, prosperity is not viewed simply as personal material gain. It can provide favorable conditions for generosity, spiritual practice, and beneficial activity.
Each of the Five Jambhalas represents a different aspect of prosperous and beneficial activity. Together, they add the symbolism of abundance, generosity, favorable circumstances, and stability to this elaborate composition.
Protector Deities
The painting also incorporates powerful Buddhist protector figures, adding another dimension of strength and protective activity.
White Mahakala is associated with protective activity and favorable conditions.
Vajrapani embodies the strength and power of enlightened activity. His vajra, or thunderbolt, symbolizes indestructible spiritual power.
Other protective figures within the composition represent the removal of obstacles and the safeguarding of Dharma practice.
Om Mani Padme Hum
Thousand-Armed Avalokiteshvara is closely associated with the sacred mantra:
Om Mani Padme Hum
One of the best-known mantras in Tibetan Buddhism is traditionally recited as part of Chenrezig practice to cultivate compassion and wisdom.
Master-Level Himalayan Craftsmanship
This large Thangka is completely hand-painted on handmade cotton canvas. The artist has carefully rendered the numerous arms, faces, sacred objects, surrounding Buddhas, Jambhalas, protectors, ornaments, halos, and other details using traditional Himalayan painting methods.
Natural stone pigments provide richness and depth, while gold adds luminosity to selected details throughout the composition.
The complexity of a Thousand-Armed Avalokiteshvara composition requires considerable precision and patience, particularly because of the large number of figures and symbolic elements incorporated into a single balanced painting.
This is an original hand-painted artwork, not a print or reproduction.
