This Tibetan Thangka Painting portrays Vajrayogini, a significant figure in Vajrayana or Tantric Buddhism. She is a female Tantric deity and is often called the queen of Dakinis or "sky dancers." Many regard her as the ultimate teacher of Anuttarayoga Tantra, a Yoga discipline that enables people to overcome their powerful desires and attachments to achieve enlightenment. Vajrayogini is the primary dakini of the Tantra of Chakrasamvara, also referred to as "Heruka," and is the most essential tantric goddess in all traditions of Tibetan Buddhism.

Vajrayogini is admired by people in Nepal, particularly the Newari community in our region. One of the most famous temples dedicated to her is located in Sankhu, a village near Changu Narayan. Our thangka painting school is also situated in this area.

Vajrayogini is depicted in many different forms, each with a unique name and appearance. She is usually presented as a beautiful young girl with three eyes, holding a "driguk" or vajra-handled knife in her right hand and a kapala or skull filled with blood in her left hand. In traditional thangka art, she is often depicted in the Naropa form, as the blood drinker Naro Khacho, as the red dancing dakini Vajravarahi, the severed head form Chinnamasta, the black form Krodha Kali, or the manifestation Dechen Gyalmo, which takes a standing pose similar to Queen Maya Devi, the mother of Buddha.

Each aspect of Vajrayogini, her different forms and mandala, has a unique spiritual significance. She can appear alone or surrounded by other deities and assume various poses.
