The Medicine Buddha, also known as Bhaisajyaguru, is revered as the Buddha of Healing. Meditating on the Medicine Buddha is believed to be a powerful method to increase healing powers, enabling practitioners to alleviate their sufferings and those of others. Bhaisajyaguru, through his infinite compassion and generosity, helps sincere seekers overcome physical illness and infirmity. More importantly, he is considered the skillful doctor who cures the great disease afflicting all sentient beings. By providing the Dharma as a profound antidote to the poisons of attachment, hatred, and ignorance, he removes the veil of delusion and shows the path to freedom.

The Buddha is depicted with his right hand extended downward, palm open, with the thumb and index finger touching, in a posture known as Varada Mudra, or the gesture of granting wishes. This gesture symbolizes Bhaisajyaguru's kindness, charity, and compassion towards all living beings. On the same hand, he holds a sprig of the Myrobalan plant, an important healing herb in Ayurvedic medicine, believed to have the power to heal the body and free one from the inner sicknesses of attachment, hatred, and ignorance. His left-hand lies in his lap with his palm upward in the gesture of meditation (Dhyana Mudra), representing the eradication of all sickness and suffering through the realization of absolute truth. On the same hand, he holds the traditional begging bowl of an ordained Buddhist monk, which contains sacred medicinal nectar that cures all ills and hindrances.

Therefore, one should think of oneself as someone who is sick, the Dharma as the remedy, the Buddha as a skillful doctor, and diligent practice as the way to recovery.
