This is an original hand-painted Thangka of Manjushree Bodhisattva adorned with silk brocade. The Manjushri is considered a "God of Divine Wisdom" and is believed to bring wisdom and intelligence to those who worship him. In Tibetan Buddhism, Manjusri takes on various Tantric forms. According to the Swayambhu Purana, the Kathmandu Valley was once a lake. It is believed that Manjusri saw a lotus flower in the center of the lake and created a gorge at Chovar to allow the lake to drain. The place where the lotus flower settled is now known as Swayambhunath Stupa and the valley became habitable.
