This Thangka painting depicts Simhamukhi/Simhamukha Vajrayogini, also known as the Lion-Faced Dakini. Her body is black, and her face is that of a white lion with three round yellow eyes, giving her a fierce appearance. Her mouth is open, revealing a yellow beard, eyebrows, and hair that flows upward. She holds a curved knife called Kartika in her right hand, raised to the sky, and a skull cup of blood to her heart with her left hand. Simhamukha carries a Khatvanga staff, tipped with a trident, in the bend of her elbow supported against the shoulder. Simhamukha is depicted as wearing a tiara decorated with five skulls, a red scarf, an elephant skin, bone ornaments, a long snake, and a necklace of fifty freshly severed heads. She wears a skirt made of tiger skin and stands on her left leg with her right leg bent upwards. She tramples on a double triangle symbol, a corpse, the sun, and a multi-colored lotus seat. Simhamukha represents great fierceness and resides in a blazing fire of pristine awareness.
Simhamukha, also known as Simha Mukhi Jogini, appears in a wrathful and demonic feminine form. However, her nature is not evil or sinister. Instead, her wrathful aspect (khro gzugs) skillfully overcomes and subdues violent negative energies. Simha Mukhi is a Jnana Dakini, or wisdom goddess.
The size of the painting is 15 inches by 20 inches (38 cm x 51 cm). It is made on handmade cotton canvas and colored with gold and natural pigments. The dimensions exclude the surrounding borders.
