This is a large Oil-varnished Wheel of Life Bhavachakra Mandala Tibetan Thangka painting. This is a profound depiction of Lord Buddha's various life cycles and activities. Symbolizing the material world's inevitable aspects—birth, aging, pain, and death—it serves as a powerful representation of Buddhist teachings. The mandala, a circle representing wholeness, is prevalent on the exterior walls of Buddhist temples in Bhutan, India, Nepal, and Tibet.

The Wheel of Life, or Bhavacakra, embedded with powerful imagery, is a meditation tool and a teaching aid. Its metaphysical design comprises concentric circles, vividly held by Yama, the Lord of Death. The central circle illustrates the "Three Poisons" of ignorance, attachment, and anger, symbolized by a pig, bird, and snake. Surrounding this, a dual-layered wheel signifies the law of karma, portraying individuals experiencing the results of their actions.

Further, the painting delves into the six realms of Samsara, the cycle of existence. The higher realms include the Human Realm, the Semi-Gods Realm characterized by conflict, and the Realm of the Gods marked by sensuous experiences. In contrast, the lower realms encompass the Hell Realm, the Hungry Ghosts Realm fraught with perpetual hunger, and the Animals Realm marked by constant fear.

This Thangka, crafted on handmade cotton canvas with natural colors and Tibetan glue, exhibits masterful artistry. The oil-varnishing technique enhances its durability and provides a matte finish. This unique approach, using oil-based paints, contributes to vibrant colors and intricate detailing. The varnish layer adds a distinct shine, distinguishing it from traditional watercolor-based Thangkas. Both styles, though different, carry immense cultural and religious significance, serving as spiritual representations in Buddhist practices.
