This is an original, hand-painted masterpiece of Machig Labdrön (Tibetan: Ahdron Chodron), one of the most revered female masters in Tibetan Buddhism. Recognized as a reincarnation of Yeshe Tsogyal, Machig Labdrön was an 11th-century yogini and the founder of Chöd, a powerful meditation practice that “cuts through” ego-clinging and fear by offering one’s own body as an act of compassion and liberation.

Unlike her male contemporaries, Machig was both Tibetan and female, breaking convention to become one of the most influential lineage founders in Vajrayana Buddhism. Her life was a synthesis of Prajnaparamita wisdom, tantric guru yoga, and uncompromising realization.

Symbolism and Story

  • Born with the sacred syllable “AH” on her forehead — a mark of an enlightened dakini.

  • By age eight, she could recite the Prajnaparamita Sutra from memory.

  • Chose a life of simplicity and fearlessness, living among outcasts to embody the essence of the Chöd path.

  • In a pivotal vision, she offered her own body to fierce nagas, transforming hostility into devotion — the foundational teaching of Chöd: feed your demons, don’t fight them, dissolving ego and fear into wisdom.

This Thangka captures Machig Labdrön’s serene yet fierce presence, radiating inner freedom and enlightened courage.
