This gesture is known as "Buddha Shakyamuni Conquering the Demons" and represents the moment of his enlightenment under the Bodhi tree. In some representations, he also holds a begging bowl containing three precious nectars, which symbolizes his victory over the three demons of uncontrolled death, contaminated aggregates, and delusion.
